About TMTG..
- Given the threats against global security and especially developments at maritime domain, to meet new security challenges and to demonstrate Turkish Navy’s capability to deploy efforts for prolonged periods, Turkish Maritime Task Group (TMTG) has been activated on a yearly basis to deploy in the area of interest in order to promote security and stability at sea while contributing to the world’s place.
- TMTG, whose operational control is exercised by Turkish Navy Command HQ, consist of 3-4 frigates and one logistic supply ship and is commanded by a rear admiral.
- In this framework, the aim of TMTG, which has been activated for the first time in Turkish Republic’s history on 2010, is determined as “To sustain Turkish Navy’s capacity to operate with allies and NATO partners, enhance cooperation and interoperability and demonstrate the Turkish Navy’s commitment to maritime peace and stability while supporting ongoing NATO and UN operations worldwide.
- During her first activation (6 May-6 July 2010) in the Mediterranean, the TMTG has conducted port visits at Tunis/Tunisia, Algiers/Algeria, Cartagena/Spain, Taranto/Italy, Bar/Montenegro, Neum/Bosnia Herzegovina, Split/Croatia, Durres&Vlore/Albania and Alexandria/Egypt, in order to enhance cooperation and improve already existing good level relations among allied/friendly nations.
- In 2011, TMTG supported ongoing counter-piracy operations in Gulf of Aden, Somali basin and adjacent areas while contributing NATO and other multi-national efforts and endeavour. In this regard TMTG provided naval escort for Turkish and non-Turkish flagged vessels in the Gulf of Aden to ensure safe navigation and protect against piracy attacks. The objective of the convoy operation is to facilitate international effort to provide shipping protection for merchant vessels transiting the Gulf of Aden.
- Baseline operations were conducted in designated segments on the internationaly recommended transit corridor (IRTC) with a frigate and AOR. TMTG conducted port visits in Oman, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Pakistan, India, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and will conduct passage exercises with these countries and other multinational force in the area when feasible. It is worth to stress that, during her following annual deployments TMTG will continue to support ongoing UN and NATO operations worldwide.
