The navy celebrated the construction of future İ-class frigate “ İSTANBUL” at the İstanbul Shipyard Command on 19 January. It is the first frigate out of a total of four to be built under Turkish Navy’s Frigate Project. A broad range of dignitaries including Defence Minister Fikri IŞIK, Commander of Turkish Naval Forces Admiral Bülent BOSTANOĞLU, Commander of Fleet Admiral Veysel KÖSELE attended the ceremony. Other participants that marked the ceremony were veteran Ahmet KAYAOĞLU, who was injured in a mine explosion in 2007, and Elife BOYDAŞ, daughter of an ex-enlisted sailor Selahattin BOYDAŞ, who died a martyr in Bingöl in 1994. The first welding of the ship was commenced by them together with Admirals Bülent BOSTANOĞLU and Veysel KÖSELE. Admiral BOSTANOĞLU also delivered a speech highlighting that frigate İSTANBUL was designed by the staff of Turkish Naval Forces. With the design of İ-class frigates, MİLGEM Project is playing a role of locomotive in enhancement of national industry. The first national frigate “ İSTANBUL” will be completed within the next 4 years.
