In the event of illegal entries into our ports by suspected ships within the operation, it is reported to components of Coast Guard Command to search and control the ships Information gathered within the operation is sent to NATO authorities as well as components of ACTIVE ENDEAVOUR and UNIFIL operations.
Operation Mediterranean Shield is of great importance in order to disencourage possible risks and threats and illegal acts and protect sea lines of communication in the eastern Mediterranean, where the importance of global maritime commerce has risen especially after oil pipelines of Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan became operational.
The proceedings in MENA (Middle East and North Africa) after the Arab Spring which started in 2011 further increased the importance of the maritime security in Eastern Mediterranean. Turkish Navy provides a considerable contribution to the maritime security through Operation Mediterranean Shield.
